GREENVILLE, S.C.- The South Carolina Lady Gamecocks, ranked No. 21 in the country, had three players claim flight championships today at the Furman Fall Classic women's tennis tournament.

The Lady Gamecocks first title came at flight three, where South Carolina's Kathy Boyanovich and Vanderbilt's Kelly Schmandt split sets 5-7, 6-1 before Schmandt was forced to withdraw at 2-0 in the third set due to injury.

South Carolina won its second championship at flight five when Lady Gamecock Jodi Kenoyer defeated Clemson's Laurence Jayet in a tight three-set match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. The third South Carolina title came in an all-Lady Gamecock flight seven final between Tamara Sutton and Magda Wojydto, with Sutton taking the crown, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Perhaps the most dramatic final was the flight one championship between Middle Tennessee State's Manon Kruse and Vanderbilt's Sarah Riske. After splitting the first two sets, Kruse edged Riske in the decisive final set to claim the 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory.

Host Furman had a strong showing from two freshmen as Mary Kovarik and Mary Neill Hagood had quality wins to secure third place in their respective flights. Kovarik, who competed in the second flight, defeated North Carolina's Aniela Mojzis in a close two-set match, 7-6(5), 7-5. After dropping the first set, Hagood bounced back to overcome Iowa's Pascale Veraverbeke 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-1 in flight four action.

Furman sophomore Shellie Cochran also secured a third place finish in the seventh flight with a sound 6-1, 7-6(5) victory over Clemson's Anna Dolinska.
