VANDERBILT ENJOYS SUCCESSFUL DAY ONE AT FURMAN FALL CLASSIC

GREENVILLE, S.C.- The Vanderbilt Lady Commodores won five of six singles matches and advanced to two doubles finals today during day one of the Furman Fall Classic women's tennis tournament held at Furman's Mickel Tennis Center.

Vanderbilt, ranked No. 4 in the country, had players win singles matches in flights one, two, three, five, and six and will participate in the doubles championships of flights two and three.

No. 17 ranked North Carolina also enjoyed a successful day as five of seven Lady Tar Heels advanced in singles play and two doubles tandems earned spots in flight championships.

Host Furman also fared well on the day as the Lady Paladins' Megan Dunigan and Natalie The made their way to the flight one championship with wins over teams from Wisconsin and Vanderbilt. In the first round, Dunigan and The defeated Wisconsin's Katie Dougherty and Lara Vojnov, 8-5. They then followed that victory with an 8-6 triumph over Vanderbilt's Katie Burson and Audra Falk.

Furman also had players advance in the flight two, three, and four singles draws. In flight two, freshman Mary Kovarik defeated Middle Tennessee State's Verena Preiss 6-2, 6-1, while in flight three, Furman's The downed Clemson's Ana Stiglic in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. Freshman Mary Neill Hagood rounded out Furman's success in singles play with a convincing 6-1, 6-3 victory over Middle Tennessee State's Michaela Gridling.

Furman's Dunigan, who defeated North Carolina's No. 11 ranked Marlene Mejia in a tournament last weekend, lost a tough three-set match today in flight one play against Mejia's teammate Julie Rotondi, 0-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The tournament will continue starting tomorrow morning with singles play at 9:00. The doubles championships will follow beginning at 1:00 p.m.
