FURMAN'S DUNIGAN, COCHRAN TAKE THIRD PLACE FINISHES AT FURMAN FALL CLASSIC

GREENVILLE, S.C.-- Furman's Megan Dunigan and Shellie Cochran earned straight-set victories on Sunday, giving them both third place finishes in their flights at the Furman Fall Classic. Cochran defeated Iowašs Beth Hayden 7-6 (1), 6-3, and Dunigan beat Middle Tennessee Statešs Manon Kruse 7-6 (6), 6-1 at the Minor Mickel Tennis Center.

Teams from the Southeastern Conference continued their streak of success, as six of the seven singles championships were divided amongst South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt. In the flight one final, South Carolina's Katarina Markovski fended off Vanderbilt's Julie Ditty 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4. Markovski's teammate, Kathy Boyanovich, defeated Tennessee's Agnes Wiski 7-6 (3), 6-1 in the flight three championship.

The all-Vanderbilt flight two final was won by Sarah Riske because of a default by injury. Vanderbilt's second champion, Aleke Tsoubanos, beat Tennessee's Kim Gates 6-3, 0-6, 6-2.

Tennessee players Crystal Cleveland and Brooke Cordell both won 7-5, 6-3, to win flights five and six, respectively.

The lone player not in the Southeastern Conference to win a singles flight was Iowa's Jody Scheldt, who defeated South Carolina's Leigh Eichelberger in the flight seven final. Scheldt won the first set 7-5, but the match could not be finished because Eichelberger was forced to retire due to an injury.

In their bids for fifth place finishes, Furman's Meredith Moore and Krista Thomson both came up short. Moore lost to Tennessee's Vilmarie Castellvi 7-6 (2), 6-1. Thomson was defeated by South Carolina's Catherine Brown 7-6 (3), 6-0.
