GREENVILLE, S.C.- The Furman women's tennis team (14-8, 8-0 Southern Conference) clinched a share of the Southern Conference regular season title this afternoon as the Lady Paladins shut out the Georgia Southern Eagles (5-12, 2-7 Southern Conference) 7-0 at Mickel Tennis Center. The win marks the 28th straight Southern Conference victory, third consecutive regular season title, and league-high ninth overall regular season title for the Lady Paladins.
Furman began the match by winning two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Krista Thomson and Emelie Isaksson won at No. 3 with an 8-0 win against Amy Winter and Virginia Baldwin. Megan Dunigan and Shellie Cochran then clinched the point with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 against Brooke McNamee and Callie Ward. Georgia Southernšs Isabella Kling and Amy Bartlett won their No. 1 doubles match against Gene Holman and Natalie The, 8-6.
Furman then went on to win every singles match to seal the 7-0 victory. Holman, The, Isaksson, Thomson, and Cochran were victorious in straight-sets. The most entertaining match came at No. 1 singles, where it took three sets for Dunigan to outlast Georgia Southern's Kling, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (2).
The Lady Paladins will be seeded first in their search for their fourth straight Southern Conference tournament championship, which will be held April 19-22 in Charleston, S.C. Furman will be gunning for an outright conference regular season championship as it completes the regular season Wednesday, April 11 against Wofford.
