SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE SCHOOLS FILL 12 OF 14 SINGLES FINALS SLOTS; TENNESSEE TAKES TWO OF THREE DOUBLES TITLES
GREENVILLE, S.C.-- South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt continued successful
campaigns on day two of the Furman Fall Classic, as the three Southeastern Conference
schools combined to fill 17 of the possible 20 final slots at the Minor Mickel
Tennis Center.
In todayıs doubles championships, Tennessee took flights one and three, and
Vanderbilt won the second flight. Furmanıs Krista Thomson and Shellie Cochran,
who advanced to the flight three final early Saturday afternoon, were later
defeated 8-2 in the championship by Tennesseeıs Brooke Cordell and Agnes Wiski.
In one of the better matches of the day, Vanderbiltıs Julie Ditty, the highest
ranked player in the Classic at number 25 in the nation, fought off Furmanıs
Megan Dunigan 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 to advance to the flight one final. Ditty will face
South Carolinaıs Katarina Markovski, who defeated Middle Tennessee Stateıs Manon
Kruse 6-3, 6-4. Kruse and Dunigan will play for third place in flight one.
Vanderbilt is assured of at least one singles championship, as two Commodore
players, Jenny Miller and Sarah Riske, will face off in the flight two singles
final. In total, four singles players from each Vanderbilt, South Carolina,
and Tennessee will be competing tomorrow in championship matches.
Play will begin on Sunday at 9 a.m., with the final group of matches slated
to start at 11 a.m.
