FURMAN WOMEN'S TENNIS OPENS SEASON WITH TWO VICTORIES

GREENVILLE ‹ The Furman University women's tennis team successfully opened its 2001 season with consecutive 7-0 victories over Winthrop and UNC-Charlotte. The reigning Southern Conference champions did not drop a set in either match today at the Minor Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University.

In the first dual match of the day, the Lady Paladins quickly dismantled the Winthrop Lady Eagles. Megan Dunigan, Gene Holman, Emelie Isaksson, Natalie The, Krista Thomson, and Lauren Welch all earned dominating victories in singles play, outscoring Winthrop in games 72-15.

In doubles, Dunigan and Meredith Moore defeated Ana Rojas and Renata Barreto 8-1. Holman and Shellie Cochran followed suit with another 8-1 win over Judit Trunkos and Jackie Deason. Thomson and McCall Holman were victorious in the No. 3 doubles slot, beating Missy Laval and Jennifer Threatt, 8-0.

The Lady Paladins were just as dominant in their match against UNC Charlotte. Gene Holman and Shellie Cochran were both 6-0, 6-0 victors. Meredith Moore, Emelie Isaksson, Natalie The, and McCall Holman also won in straight sets.

In doubles, Moore and Megan Dunigan earned their second win of the day, tallying an 8-1 victory over Alice Hansen and Lauren Hastings. The partnered with Krista Thomson to overcome Bailey Gainey and Kelly Rue, 8-1. In one of the tougher matches of the day, Isaksson and Lauren Welch defeated Ali Lacy and Stacie Luders, 8-4.

The Lady Paladins will next face the University of South Carolina on Febuary 6th at the Minor Mickel Tennis Center.
