FURMAN TENNIS TEAMS HEAD TO SOCON TOURNAMENT IN CHATTANOOGA

GREENVILLE The Furman men's and women's tennis teams will seek berths in the NCAA Tournament this weekend as they head to Chattanooga, Tenn., on Thursday for the 2000 Southern Conference tennis tournamant.

The Lady Paladins are the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and the overwhelming favorite to win their third straight conference title. Furman finished the conference regular season with a 9-0 league mark as they won 53 of 54 conference singles matches. The Lady Paladins' closest conference match was a 7-2 defeat of No. 2 seed East Tennessee State. Furman is currently 15-7 on the year and have won nine of its last 10 matches.

Furman opens the conference tournament Friday at 9:30 a.m. against the winner of Davidson and Wofford. The Lady Paladins have been led by sophomore Megan Dunigan, who has posted a 17-4 overall record this season.

The Furman men's tennis team enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed behind East Tennessee State. The Bucs downed Furman in a tight 4-3 contest last week. Furman is 20-12 on the season and finished 9-1 in the Southern Conference. The Paladins open the conference tournament Friday at 1:00 p.m. against the winner of The Citadel and Wofford.

The Lady Paladins have won a league-high eight Southern Conference regular season and tournament championships. The Paladins have won a league-high 12 conference regular season titles and ten tournament championships. The winner of both league tournaments will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
