FURMAN TENNIS HOSTS TOP TEAMS AT FALL CLASSIC
GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- The Minor Herndon Mickel Tennis Center on the Furman University campus will be buzzing with activity this weekend as Furman hosts seven teams in its annual Fall Classic.
As usual, the 1999 Fall Classic will feature some of the top women's tennis programs in the country, including Vanderbilt, which finished the 1998 season ranked 13th, South Carolina, which was ranked 15th, Tennessee, 16th, Iowa, 38th, and Wisconsin, 50th. In addition, Middle Tennessee State and Furman will compete in this flighted championship.
Through the years, the Fall Classic has hosted two singles players who went on to win the NCAA Individual Title. San Diego's Zuzana Lesenarova played the Classic in 1997 and won the 1999 NCAA Championship and Georgia's Angela Lettiere played the '95 Classic and won the 1996 NCAA Title. This year's field features five individuals ranked in the top 100 and three doubles teams ranked in the top 35. At 22nd, South Carolina's Katarina Markovski is the highest ranked singles player in the field.
Competition in the Furman Fall Classic begins Friday morning at 9 a.m. with the first round of singles play. The first of two doubles rounds start Friday at 1 p.m. Action continues on Saturday with singles championships played on Sunday.
