VANDERBILT ADVANCES TO DOUBLES FINALS AT FALL CLASSIC

FURMAN'S ISAKSSON WINS IN SINGLES

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- The Commodores of Vanderbilt University ended the 1999 spring season ranked 13th in the nation and unveiled their plans for another attack in 2000 Friday at the Furman Fall Classic. Vandy went undefeated in singles and doubles, thereby advancing to the championship match of all three doubles flights.

In doubles action Vanderbilt's Kristy Blumberg and Kate Burson advanced to the flight one championship versus Iowa's Toni Neykova and Shera Wiegler, while Sarah Riske and Anne Plessinger teamed up to advance to the finals of flight two against Leigh Eichelberger and Lynn-Yin Tan of South Carolina. In addition, the Commodore's Jenny Miller and Lauren Rose will play Megan Kearney and Erica Johnson of Iowa for the flight three championship.

For the hosting Lady Paladins, sophomore Emelie Isaksson advanced to the second round of the flight five singles draw with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Clemson's Sunny Harmon. Injuries were Furman's biggest rival on Friday, however, as Jarrell Starnes and Megan Dunigan defaulted their remaining singles matches due to injuries.

South Carolina's Katarina Markovski, the 22nd-ranked player in the country, advanced in flight two singles with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over MTSU's Katja Kuehner, while USC's Jennifer Radman dropped her flight one match by a 2-6, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5) decision to Toni Neykova.

Action continues in the Furman Fall Classic Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. with the second round of singles. The doubles championships will begin at 1 p.m.
