DAVIDSON, NC -- Furman women's tennis freshman Megan Dunigan, who was ranked in the nation's top 100 for over a month this season, was named Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year and Southern Conference Freshman-of-the-Year on Thursday at the Southern Conference women's tennis banquet in Davidson, N.C. In addition, Dunigan was named to the all-conference squad and was declared the No. 1 singles flight champion.
Dunigan is the first women's tennis player in Southern Conference history to garner both awards in the same season. Dunigan's player-of-the-year honor is the first for Furman since 1993 and her freshman-of-the-year honor gives Furman its second in as many years as Meredith Moore was the 1998 SoCon freshman-of-the-year.
Along with Dunigan, Meredith Moore was named to the six-person all-conference singles squad. The rest of Furman's lineup was also honored as a total of four Lady Paladins earned flight championships for having the best record in their respective flights. Along with Dunigan's No. 1 singles flight championship, Moore claimed the No. 2 singles title, freshman Gene Holman held the top record at No. 4 singles, while senior Jen Connell tied as the No. 6 singles champion.
Dunigan, from Oak Ridge, Tenn., posted an 8-1 Southern Conference singles mark, while tallying a 25-12 overall record from both the fall and spring seasons. She came to Furman after totalling a perfect 82-0 prep singles record.
The Lady Paladin squad won a share of the 1999 Southern Conference regular season championship and will try to repeat as Southern Conference tournament champions when they begin play Friday at 9:30 a.m., in Davidson, N.C. against Georgia Southern. Furman is 13-9 overall, 8-1 in the Southern Conference and is the No. 2 seed in the tournament. UNC Greensboro, also 8-1 in the conference, is the top seed by virtue of a 5-4 victory over the Lady Paladins on March 27.
