DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team defeated College of Charleston 5-1 Sunday to earn their second straight Southern Conference Tournament Championship and their first ever NCAA Tournament bid.
The Lady Paladins were paced by Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year Megan Dunigan, who won the clinching match 6-0, 5-7, 6-1 at No. 1 singles over Charleston's Elizabeth Williams. Meredith Moore, Jarrell Starnes, Jen Connell, and Alix Refshauge each won straight set victories for the Lady Paladins, who clinched the match in just over two hours, without the need of doubles play.
Junior Jarrell Starnes, of Charlotte, N.C., was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after winning all three of her matches in straight sets. Starnes, who usually plays No. 5 singles, was forced to play No. 4 singles throughout the tournament and also claimed a key doubles victory in Saturday's semifinal victory over Chattanooga.
Furman won their eighth straight match and improved to 16-9 on the season. The Lady Paladins won their league-best eighth Southern Conference Tournament Title. Furman will play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on May 15 at a site to be determined, while selection for the tournament will be May 5.
