GREENVILLE -- The Furman women's tennis team claimed a share of the 1999 Southern Conference Regular Season Championship by defeating Appalachian State 8-1 Sunday at the Minor Mickel Tennis Center. Furman finishes the regular season with a 13-9 overall record, 8-1 in the Southern Conference. This marks Furman's seventh regular season title., the most of any Southern Conference team. The Lady Paladins last won the Southern Conference regular season title in 1994.
The Lady Paladins were led by Megan Dunigan's 6-0, 6-2 victory over Simone Kaiser at No. 1 singles. Meredith Moore, Gene Holman, Jarrell Starnes, Jen Connell, and Alix Refshauge also earned singles victories. Holman's victory concluded a perfect 9-0 conference season at No.'s 3 and 4 singles. A freshman from Shelby, N.C., Holman holds the Lady Paladins top overall record with a 17-5 mark.
In doubles action, Megan Dunigan and Jarrell Starnes led the way with a victory over Summer Scruggs and Jennifer Fayad at No. 2 doubles. Appalachian State won at No. 1 doubles for the Mountaineers lone point.
Furman shares the title with UNC Greensboro, who earns the top seed by virtue of a 5-4 defeat of the Lady Paladins on March 27. The Lady Paladins will be the No. 2 seed in next weekend's Southern Conference Tournament in Davidson, N.C. The winner of the SoCon Tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
