Furman's Scarpa, Southern Named Coach of the Year

Greenville, S.C. -- Furman's men's tennis coach Paul Scarpa and women's tennis coach Debbie Southern were named Southern Conference Coaches-of-the-Year Sunday.

  Scarpa, who directed the men's tennis team to the 1998 Southern Conference Regular Season Title and a perfect 9-0 record was named coach-of-the-year for the fifth time.  His last coach-of-the-year citation was in 1986.  Scarpa, who holds a 645-382 in 35 seasons as head coach is the second active winningest coach in NCAA Division I.

  Southern earned her fifth coach-of-the-year award, the first since 1993.  The Lady Paladins claimed the 1998 Southern Conference Tournament Title and finished with a 14-10 overall record, winners of ten of their 11 matches.  Southern has accumulated a 179-147 record in 14 seasons.
