Furman Women's Tennis Wins SoCon Title


SPARTANBURG -- The Furman womenıs tennis team won the 1998 Southern Conference Womenıs Tennis Tournament by defeating Chattanooga 5-3 Sunday at the Westside Club in Spartanburg.

Furmanıs Debbie Southern and Georgia Southernıs Cathy Beene were selected as co-winners of the coach-of-the-year award. Southern claimed her fifth coach-of-the-year recognition, while Beene earned her first by directing Georgia Southern to the regular season championship. Furmanıs Emelie Isaksson was named the tournamentıs Most-Outstanding Player. Isaksson, a freshman from Sweden, went 3-0 at No. 4 singles over the weekend and concludes the season with an 11 match winning streak. Isakssonıs selection breaks a string of five consecutive Georgia Southern winners of the award.

Furmanıs Kristi Kreye and Jen Connell clinched the championship with a 9-7 victory at No. 3 doubles over Pieta Horley and Katie Hangstefer. The Lady Paladins entered doubles with a 4-2 lead thanks to victories by Meredith Moore (No. 1), Emelie Isaksson (No. 4), Kristi Kreye (No. 5), and Elizabeth Bell (No. 6). Moore, a freshman from Lewisville, N.C., finished an impressive freshman year with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Karolina Glowacka. Moore finished with a team-best 15-5 record in 1998.

The title marks the seventh Southern Conference Tournament title for the Lady Paladins, but the first since 1994. Three Lady Paladins finished with perfect league records this year and with double-digit winning streaks. Senior Elizabeth Bell went 9-0 in the conference and went 10-0 for the year. Kristi Kreye went 11-0 in the conference and finished with an 11-match winning streak. Isaksson finisshed 10-0 in the Southern Conference.
