FURMAN MEN SWEEP THE CITADEL 7-0

GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman men's tennis team completed the Southern Conference regular season with a 7-0 shut out of The Citadel Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center. With the win Furman's record improved to 13-11 (9-1 SoCon) dropping The Citadel to 10-12 (6-4 SoCon).

Furman came out strong winning all three doubles matches to capture the early advantage. The Paladins went on to win all six singles matches, dropping only two sets on the day. At No.1 singles John Chesworth won his eighth straight match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Matt Stubbs while at No.2 Patrick Fillnow downed John Williams 7-5, 6-3. In the No.3 slot Allen Simmons eased by Warren Woolfolk 6-1, 6-1 and Ben Pauluhn went to three sets before beating David Lara 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. in flight four. In No.5 singles action Greg Maarschalk easily downed Carl Hocker 6-0, 6-2 and in flight six Kevin Lackey fought off a first set loss to down Robert Haynie 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.

Furman finishes up the regular season at home on Monday, hosting South Carolina State at 2:30, then begin play at the Southern Conference Tournament in Charleston, SC on April 22.
