TALLAHASSEE, FL -- The Furman men's tennis team fell to 0-5 on the year after losing a 5-2 match on Saturday to No. 39 Florida State. Florida State improved to 6-4 on the year with the victory.
Furman began the day strong, winning the doubles point for the first time this year. Furman's John Chesworth and Patrick Fillnow upset No. 48 Chris Westerhof and Jeff Groslimond 8-4 in the No. 1 doubles slot. Furman sealed the point when Scott Kahler and Kevin Lackey defeated Jarrod Owen and Joe Bassett 8-3 at No. 3 doubles. Florida state took the No. 2 doubles match with Mat Cloer and Jonathas Sucupira downing Furman's duo of Allen Simmons and Brian Crook 8-4.
Florida State then took a 2-1 lead when Chris Westerhof defeated Brain Crook 6-1,6-0 in the No.5 slot and at No.6 Jarrod Owen downed Kevin Lackey 6-2, 7-5. Furman evened the score 2-2 with Ben Pauluhn beating Chip Webb 6-3, 6-3 at No.4. Florida State then sealed the match winning the last three matches. Jonathas Sucupira ousted Patrick Fillnow 6-3, 6-3 in the No.2 slot, and at No.3 Jeff Groslimond took down Allen Simmons 6-2, 7-5. In the final match of the day Furman's John Chesworth lost a close three set match to No.25 Mat Cloer 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.
Furman takes on Michigan on Sunday in Tallahassee. Match begins at noon.
