FURMAN TOPS DAVIDSON MEN 6-1

DAVIDSON, NC -- On a breezy Sunday afternoon at Covington Outdoor Courts, the Furman men's tennis team defeated host Davidson for the seventh straight time, this time by a count of 6-1. The loss leaves Davidson (6-5, 0-3 SoCon) still searching for its first conference win of the season.

Furman (5-9, 1-0) took the doubles portion of the match by winning tight contests at number one and three. John Chesworth and Patrick Fillnow held off senior Rob Haywood and junior Donald Miles, 8-5, at number one while Kevin Lackey and Scott Kahler pulled out an 8-6 triumph over senior Bryan Stonestreet and junior Russ Burns at number three.

Furman went on to win five out of six singles matches to capture the victory. At No.1 John Chesworth eased by Rob Haywood 6-2, 6-2 and Patrick Fillnow blanked Donald Miles 6-0, 6-0 at No.2. In flight four Ben Pauluhn dropped Jonathan Britt 6-1, 6-1 and at No. 5 Brian Crook downed Russ Burns 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The final Furman win came when Kevin Lackey defeated Porus Jetli in the six slot 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. Davidson picked up their only point when Bryan Stonestreet downed Allen Simmons 7-5, 6-3.

The Paladins return home on Wednesday to take on Appalachian State. Match begins at 2:30.
