FURMAN'S CAMERON EARNS $6,900 POST-GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP


GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Furman tennis standout James Cameron was awarded a $6,900 NCAA Postgraduate scholarship, it was announced on Monday.

A native of Harrare, Zimbabwe, who graduated Furman with a 3.95 GPA in health and exercise science, Cameron is the 12th Furman athlete to earn a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, and is the only spring sport recipient in the state of South Carolina. A 2002 Doubles All-American, Cameron was the 2003 Southern Conference Player of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year. He posted a 16-10 singles record and 18-6 doubles mark while playing No. 1 for the 14-12 Paladins in the spring of 2003, and was ranked as high as No. 113 in singles and No. 19 in doubles by the ITA.

The NCAA awards 58 spring postgraduate scholarships; 29 to men and 29 to women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their last year of intercollegiate athletics competition. Nominees are required to have a grade point average of 3.200 and the intention of continuing their academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree.

Cameron, who is the first Paladin tennis player to earn this prestigious grant, will attend the Emory University School of Medicine in the fall.
