FURMAN MEN'S TENNIS DROPS 6-1 DECISION TO FIFTH-RANKED FLORIDA

GAINESVILLE, FLA.--- The 71st-ranked Furman men's tennis team (0-1, 0-0 SoCon) opened up the 2003 spring dual match season with a 6-1 loss to the fifth-ranked Florida Gators in Gainesville, Fla. on Saturday.

Furman got off to a promising start when James Cameron and Patrick Fillnow snagged an 8-5 victory against Florida's 13th ranked duo of Matt Behrmann and Troy Hahn at the No. 1 position. The Gators bounced back when Florida's Olivier Levant and Eleazar Magallan defeated Dasef Weems and Andrew Rogers 8-4 at No. 2. Florida then clinched the doubles point when Hamid Mirzadeh and Janne Holmia held off Furman's Greg Maarschalk and Allen Simmons at No. 3, 8-5.

Florida then moved on to take five singles matches to clinch the win. After Levant defeated Simmons 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4, Florida's Trey Johnson dropped Furman's Ben Pauluhn in straight sets at No. 6, 7-5, 6-1. Hahn then clinched the match for the Gators when he beat Rogers at the No. 3 slot, 6-4, 6-4. Furman's Ryan McCarthy also suffered a tough setback as he was defeated by Magallan 7-6, 6-3 at No. 5. Florida's final win came at the No. 2 position when Holmia defeated Fillnow, 7-6, 0-6, 6-1.

Furman's lone singles victory came at the No. 1 position, where Cameron defeated Mirzadeh in a tough three-set battle, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The Paladins next match will occur within the friendly confines of Mickel Tennis Center when Furman hosts Elon, Erskine, and Emory on February 8th for the Furman Shootout.
