GREENVILLE, S.C.-- The Furman men's tennis team moved to 13-11 overall and 7-2 in Southern Conference play when the Paladins topped visiting Chattanooga 7-0 at Mickel Tennis Center on Saturday.
Furman began by sweeping the Mocs in doubles action to take the doubles point. The Paladins' first victory came at the No. 2 slot, where Andrew Rogers and Ben Pauluhn overpowered Kyle True and Dustin Kane, 8-1. Furman's Allen Simmons and Chris Henderson, down 4-1 at one point, reeled off seven consecutive games to win their flight three match against Tim Kutschera and John Hangstefer, 8-4. James Cameron and Patrick Fillnow then edged Jason Ontog and Thomas Knizat at No. 1 9-8 to secure the sweep.
The Paladins then won each of their six singles matches to clinch the victory. Cameron moved to 9-0 in conference No. 1 singles action when he beat Ontog, 7-6, 6-1. While Henderson defeated Hangstefer in flight two action, 6-3, 6-3, Rogers needed a super-tiebreak third set to knock off Knizat at No. 3, 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4). Fillnow won his flight four match against Alex Mabred by a 6-3, 6-2 count, while Simmons earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Kutschera at No. 5. Furman's Ryan McCarthy won his No. 6 singles match against John Gamble, 6-2, 6-3.
Furman will next travel to Charleston, S.C. for the Southern Conference tournament against an opponent to be announced at a later date. The tournament will be held on April 16-19.
