FURMAN'S JAMES CAMERON WINS SOUTHERN CONFERENCE MALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-YEAR AWARD

GREENVILLE, S.C.-- The Southern Conference announced Thursday that Furman senior tennis player James Cameron has been named the league's male athlete-of-the-year.

Cameron's achievement marks the second consecutive year that a Furman tennis player has received league athlete-of-the-year honors as former Lady Paladin star Megan Dunigan earned the women's award in 2002.

Cameron, the 2003 Southern Conference men's tennis Player-of-the-Year, garnered a 16-10 overall mark and 9-0 conference record at No. 1 singles during the 2003 campaign. In addition to being named to the all-conference first teams for singles and doubles, Cameron was ranked as highly as No. 113 in singles and No. 19 in doubles with partner Patrick Fillnow in 2003. During his four years at Furman, the 2002 doubles All-American amassed a 63-43 overall singles mark and 74-33 doubles record.

Cameron is the first Furman men's tennis player to earn the Southern Conference male athlete-of-the-year award.

A native Harare, Zimbabwe, and 2003 Verizon Academic All-District selection, he will graduate from Furman on Saturday with a degree in health and exercise science and 3.93 grade point average. A Phi Beta Kappa selection, he has been admitted to Emory University Medical School.
