Furman Men's Tennis Downs VMI, UNCG To Claim SoCon Regular Season Title

GREENVILLE - The Furman men's tennis team defeated VMI 7-0 and UNCG 4-3 Saturday to claim at least a share of the Southern Conference regular season championship and the No. 1 seed at next weekend's conference tournament.

The Paladins improve their conference record to 9-0 as they even their overall mark at 12-12. Furman hosts Davidson Sunday and can clinch the outright title with a victory.

Andrew Rogers, Allen Simmons, and Kevin Lackley led the Paladins with straight set victories at No.'s 1-3 singles against VMI as the Paladins rolled to a 7-0 decision.

In the afternoon match, second place UNCG jumped out to the 1-0 lead by claiming all three doubles matches. Furman rallied in singles, winning four of six contests. John Chesworth, James Cameron, Patrick Gaughan, and Patrick Fillnow earned straight set singles victories to give the Paladins the victory.

VMI falls to 4-13 overall, 0-10 in league play while UNCG falls to 16-4 overall and 8-2 in the Southern Conference. The Spartans could be seeded second, third, or fourth in next weekend's conference tournament.
