DALLAS, Texas-- The No. 28 SMU men's tennis team defeated No. 67 Furman, 5-2, Thursday afternoon at Haggar Tennis Stadium.
The Mustangs got out to an early 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. The No. 10 doubles team of Johan Brunstrom and Eric Cohn led the way with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles.
In singles play, senior Krystian Pfeiffer, continued to shine as the reigning WAC Player of the Week won in straight sets at No. 1 singles. Other singles winners included Alexis Rudzinski at No. 3, Lukasz Senczyszyn at No. 4, and Gwinyai Chingoka at No. 5.
Furman earned victories at No. 2 singles as James Cameron defeated Johan Brunstrom 6-3, 7-6 and at No. 6 singles as Ryan McCarthy defeated Eric Cohn 2-6, 7-6, 7-6.
With the win SMU improves to 5-5 on the year, and travels to Richmond, Va. Friday for weekend matches against No. 53 Virginia Tech on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and No. 38 Virginia Commonwealth Sunday morning at the same time.
Furman plays Texas Christian on Friday, March 1.
