FURMAN TENNIS DROPS 4-3 HEARTBREAKER TO 29TH-RANKED WAKE FOREST

GREENVILLE, S.C.-- No. 67 Furman (1-11, 0-0 SoCon) came close to upsetting 29th-ranked Wake Forest (8-1, 1-0 ACC) on Sunday, but it was not to be as the Demon Deacons won four of six singles matches en route to defeating the homestanding Paladins 4-3 in the first men's match played at Mickel Tennis Center in 2002.

The Paladins began the day by winning two of three doubles matches, thus earning Furman the doubles point. At No. 1, Furman's James Cameron and John Chesworth defeated David Loewenthal and Trent Brendon, 8-2, but the Demon Deacons immediately rebounded with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 by Mike Murray and Derrick Spice over Furman's Andrew Rogers and Peter Netzler. The Paladins then clinched the doubles point with Chris Henderson and Allen Simmons edging David Bere and Justin Kaufmann at No. 3, 9-7.

Wake Forest evened the score at 1-1 when Murray defeated Rogers at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-3. The Demon Deacons then took a 2-1 lead with Brendon downing Furman's Patrick Gaughan at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-3.

After the Paladins answered with Chesworth beating Loewenthal in straight sets at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (7), Wake Forest pushed the score to 3-2 with a 7-6 (14), 6-4 Spice victory over Furman's Henderson at the No. 3 spot. Furman then knotted the score at 3-3 when Cameron emerged with a 7-5, 7-6 (2) triumph over Bere at No. 2 singles.

With the result hinging upon the outcome of the No. 6 singles match, Wake Forest's Kaufmann clinched the victory for the Demon Deacons with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Furman's Ryan McCarthy.

Furman will open conference play on March 16th when the Paladins travel to Charleston, S.C. to face The Citadel at 1:30 p.m.
