GREENVILLE, S.C.-- The Furman men's tennis team (5-11, 2-0 SoCon) won its fourth match in a row this afternoon at Mickel Tennis Center as the Paladins came back to upset 37th ranked Vanderbilt, 4-3. The Commodores are the highest ranked team to fall to Furman since a 4-3 Paladin victory against No. 26 North Carolina on February 13, 2001.

Vanderbilt took a 1-0 lead after the Commodores won two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. At No. 1, Furman's John Chesworth and James Cameron, the No. 22 doubles tandem in the nation, fell to Bobby Reynolds and Lewis Smith, 8-5. Furman's Chris Henderson and Allen Simmons then won their match at No. 3 against Zach Dailey and Josh Tarkoff, 8-5. Vanderbilt quickly answered by clinching the doubles point with an 8-6 Scott Brown and Chad Harris victory at No. 2 against Peter Netzler and Andrew Rogers.

Vanderbilt then took a 2-0 lead when Harris defeated Cameron at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-4. Furman responded when Ryan McCarthy beat Smith at the No. 5 spot, 6-3, 6-4.

Vanderbilt pushed the score to 3-1 with Jens Frederiksen's 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory against Patrick Fillnow at No. 6, but Furman answered when Chesworth, who is ranked 48th nationally, defeated Reynolds, who is ranked 30th, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot.

After Furman knotted the score at 3-3 with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 Henderson victory over Dailey at No. 3 singles, Paladin Patrick Gaughan clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 triumph against Brown at No. 4 singles.

Furman will travel to Statesboro, Ga. on Sunday to face Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern at 1:30 p.m.
