CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- The University of North Carolina men's tennis team defeated the Furman Paladins 5-2 at North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Wednesday. The loss marks Furman's fourth loss to a top 50 opponent this season.

North Carolina (2-1) swept all three doubles matches to take the doubles point against Furman (1-4), including an 8-2 victory for Nicholas Monroe and Geoff Boyd over the No. 14 doubles team in the country, John Chesworth and James Cameron.

In singles action, 73rd-ranked Marcio Petrone held off Chesworth 6-7(4), 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, while Andy Metzler defeated Furman's Chris Henderson 7-6 (6), 7-5 at No. 4. Trystan Meniane picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Furman's Patrick Gaughan at No. 5 singles, while Daniel Pinchbeck defeated Paladin Ryan McCarthy 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot.

Furman did register two singles victories on the day, with Furman's Cameron defeating Nicholas Monroe 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 and Patrick Fillnow beating Geoff Boyd 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 3.

Furman will resume play on February 24th when the Paladins travel to Athens, Ga. to face the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs at 2:00 p.m.
