NO. 64 FURMAN MEN'S TENNIS BLANKS UC-IRVINE 7-0

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Furman University men's tennis team notched a 7-0 victory over the University of California at Irvine in the season opener for both squads at the Eck Tennis Pavilion on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. The 64th-ranked Paladins took the doubles point and won all six singles matches to gain the victory. The Paladins will next face seventh ranked Notre Dame at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

In doubles, John Chesworth and James Cameron, ranked 14th nationally, beat the 27th-ranked pair of Jonathan Endrikat and Brian Morton 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. Furman clinched the doubles point when Chris Henderson and Peter Netzler defeated Greg Biorkman and Wkwesi Williams 8-6 at No. 3. The Anteaters gained a win at No. 2 with Sean O'Connor and Renouk Wijemanne beating Patrick Fillnow and Andrew Rogers 9-8 (9-7).

Chesworth gave the Paladins a 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Carl Lumsden at No. 1 singles. Patrick Gaughan then defeated Morton 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 before Cameron clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Endrikat at No. 2.

After the outcome was decided, Henderson downed Biorkman 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4, Fillnow beat O'Connor 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3, and Ryan McCarthy beat Wijemanne 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 at No. 6.

After taking on the Irish Saturday, Furman will travel to No. 45 Northwestern for a 1:30 p.m. match with the Wildcats.
