NO. 45 NORTHWESTERN HOLDS OFF NO. 64 RANKED FURMAN MEN'S TENNIS, 6-1

EVANSTON, Ill.-- The Furman men's tennis team dropped its second match in as many days as the No. 45 Northwestern Wildcats defeated the 64th ranked Paladins 6-1 in Evanston, Illinois on Sunday. Furman is now 1-2 on the season.

Furman opened up the day with John Chesworth and James Cameron, the No. 14 doubles team in the nation, defeating Northwestern's Ryan Edlefsen and Russell Bennett, 8-5. Northwestern then answered as the Wildcats' No. 2 team of Jackie Jenkins and Chuck Perrin defeated Patrick Fillnow and Andrew Rogers, 8-5. Northwestern then clinched the doubles point when, after 90 minutes of emotional play, Josh Axler and Tommy Hanus beat Furman's Chris Henderson and Peter Netzler, 9-8 (7).

Axler carried the momentum from the doubles match into No. 5 singles, where he defeated Patrick Gaughan, 6-0, 6-3. Northwestern's Edlefsen then defeated Furman's Chesworth 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3), followed by a 6-1, 6-2 Hanus victory over Furman's Fillnow. Northwestern's Perrin then finished off Furman's Ryan McCarthy at the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 7-5, while Jenkins outlasted Furman's Henderson in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Furman's lone point on the day came at No. 2 singles, where Cameron defeated Nortwestern's Jamie Sahara, 7-6 (6), 6-0.

Furman will next face No. 35 Florida on January 26th in Gainesville, Fla.
