FURMAN TENNIS PROGRAMS FACE KEY WEEKEND SHOWDOWNS

GREENVILLE, S.C.-- The Furman men and women's tennis matches will be surrounded by a flurry of activity on Saturday at Mickel Tennis Center. The day will start with a Kids Carnival featuring games and prizes from 12:00-1:00 p.m. The matches will then begin at 1:00 p.m., during which Marble Slab Creamery will serve free ice cream to kids ages 6-13. The women's match will also feature a ceremony honoring all-time singles victories record holder Megan Dunigan.

The day's main event includes the Paladin and Lady Paladin tennis teams, who have both gathered some mid-season steam, facing important weekend tests. While the men will host the 37th ranked Vanderbilt Commodores, the women will face Dartmouth as both squads hope to continue their recent streaks of success.

The men's team (4-11, 2-0 SoCon), which has won its last three matches against The Citadel, College of Charleston, and Charlotte, is led by No. 1 singles player John Chesworth, who entered last week's ITA Collegiate Tennis Poll ranked 48th in the country. The meeting versus the Commodores marks the third time these two teams have squared off, with Vanderbilt currently holding the 2-0 advantage. The Commodores are the 13th nationally ranked opponent the Paladins have faced this season.

The 61st ranked Furman women's tennis team (12-3, 3-0 SoCon), meanwhile, is on a streak of its own as it has won four matches in a row. The Lady Paladins, who own a Southern Conference record 35 league match win streak, are led by senior and 62nd ranked Megan Dunigan. Dunigan is 15-0 in 2002 and is fresh off breaking Furman's all-time singles victories record. With her win against Wofford's Wendy Rohr on Friday, Dunigan pushed her collegiate record to 70-18, one victory ahead of the 69 wins registered by former Lady Paladin standouts Janey Strause and Karen Kelly.
