CHARLESTON, S.C.-- The Furman men's tennis team (2-11, 1-0 SoCon) brought its 11-match losing skid to an end as the Paladins defeated The Citadel 7-0 this afternoon in Charleston, S.C. The match, which was the conference opener for the Paladins, was a welcome change as The Citadel was the first Furman opponent that has not been nationally ranked in 2002.
Furman began the day by sweeping the Bulldogs in doubles action. While John Chesworth and James Cameron defeated The Citadel's Matt Stubbs and John Williams 8-4 in the No. 1 matchup, Furman's Andrew Rogers and Peter Netzler downed Ben Fortune and David Scates 8-3 at the No. 2 spot. Furman's Chris Henderson and Allen Simmons completed the sweep by recording an 8-1 victory over John Dougherty and Lawrence Tere at No. 3.
After taking the doubles point, Furman carried the momentum into singles play where the Paladins completed the shutout.
At No. 1, Furman's Chesworth defeated Stubbs, 6-3, 6-4, while Cameron beat Fortune at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0. Furman's Henderson registered another straight-set victory for Furman as he defeated Tere at No. 3, 6-3, 7-5.
Furman's Patrick Gaughan then upended Dougherty 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4, while Fillnow emerged with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 5 against Williams. Paladin Ryan McCarthy completed the shutout with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sebastian Padron at the No. 6 slot.
The Paladins will stay overnight in Charleston as they gear up for a Southern Conference showdown against in-state rival College of Charleston tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
