FURMAN'S JOHN CHESWORTH NAMED SOCON TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Southern Conference announced today that Furman's John Chesworth was named the SoCon Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his performances through March 12th.

Chesworth, a junior from Burnley, Lancashire, England, has registered a 6-6 singles record on the season thus far, all at the No. 1 slot, including a straight-set win over Georgia's 11th-ranked Brandon Wagner.

On Sunday, Chesworth defeated Wake Forest's 30th-ranked David Loewenthal 6-3 , 7-6 (7) in the Paladins' 4-3 loss to the No. 29 ranked Demon Deacons. Chesworth also teamed with partner James Cameron to knock off Wake's Loewenthal and Trent Brendon at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. Chesworth and Cameron, who have been ranked as high as 14th nationally in 2002, are currently 7-6 on the year.

Furman (1-11, 0-0 SoCon) will face its first conference opponent on Saturday when the Paladins travel to Charleston, S.C. for a showdown against The Citadel at 1:30 p.m.
