FURMAN MEN'S TENNIS HANDS CHARLOTTE 5-2 LOSS

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- The Furman men's tennis team won its third straight dual match as the Paladins defeated the Charlotte 49ers 5-2 today in Charlotte. With the victory, Furman moves to 4-11 on the year.

Furman started the match by winning two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. At No. 1, Furman's James Cameron and John Chesworth, the 22nd ranked duo in the country, defeated Ola Jonsson and Joakim Peterson, 8-5. Paladins Allen Simmons and Chris Henderson then clinched the match's opening point with an 8-6 victory against Jacob Nordwall and Jess Rutledge at the No. 3 position.

Furman's lone doubles setback came at the No. 2 spot, where Marlo Santoso and Jonathan McGovern defeated Peter Netzler and Andrew Rogers, 8-5.

The Paladins then won four of six singles matches to seal the victory. At No. 1, Chesworth, the 48th ranked player in the nation, defeated Jonsson in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Furman also received a strong performance from Patrick Gaughan, who rebounded from a one set deficit to defeat David Bolin at No. 4, 4-6, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Ryan McCarthy beat Charlotte's McGovern at No. 5, 6-3, 6-4, while Patrick Fillnow defeated 49er Jonathan Clark at No. 6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Furman's two singles setbacks came at the No. 2 and 3 positions, where Cameron lost to Nordwall, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6, and Henderson was defeated by Peterson, 6-0, 7-6.

Furman's next match will be played within the friendly confines of Mickel Tennis Center where the Paladins will face 37th ranked Vanderbilt on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
