FURMAN DOWNS NO. 26 NORTH CAROLINA 4-3

Furman posted its first ever victory over North Carolina in men's tennis Tuesday night, surprising the No. 26 Tar Heels, 4-3. In 29 previous meetings, North Carolina defeated Furman 28 times and one match ended in a tie.

The teams were tied 3-3, with the outcome hinging on the No. 1 singles match between Furman's Lee Nickell and North Carolina junior Marcio Petrone. The players split sets and Petrone broke Nickell's serve in the opening game of the final set. However, Nickell immediately broke back and the match stayed on serve until the ninth game. Petrone failed to hold serve, enabling Nickell to clinch a Paladin victory, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Furman won two out of three doubles matches to secure the contest's first point. However, the Tar Heels fought back to take a 3-2 lead on the strength of singles victories from David Cheatwood, Nicholas Monroe, and Greg Archer. Furman's Chris Henderson overcame Carolina's Chad Riley 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 to set up the climactic finish at No. 1 singles.

Furman will next travel to Tallahassee, Florida to participate in the Florida State Invitational this weekend.
