FURMAN MEN'S TENNIS SWEEPS EMORY, MARS HILL, PRESBYTERIAN

GREENVILLE, S.C.‹The Furman men's tennis team glided to three consecutive 7-0 victories over Emory, Mars Hill, and Presbyterian Saturday at the Furman University Tennis Shootout held at Furman's Minor Mickel Tennis Center.

In the day's first dual match, Furman's James Cameron, John Chesworth, Patrick Fillnow, Chris Henderson, and Eric Ward did not drop a set against Emory in singles play. Lee Nickell, Furman's No. 1 singles player, overcame a second set struggle to defeat Emory's Brett Kaplan 6-2, 0-6, 6-2. In doubles, Furman's Chesworth-Cameron, Fillnow-Andrew Rogers, and Henderson-Charlie Lloyd were dominant in their victories over Emory.

In Furman's second match of the day, the Paladins had little trouble in defeating the Mars Hill Lions. Charlie Lloyd, Jete O'Keeffe, James Moeckel, Andrew Rogers, and Peter Netzler were all victorious in singles competition. Furman's Jon Navarro and Seth Hauser teamed up in doubles to battle their way to an 8-4 win over Mars Hill's Piotr Miskiewicz and Ross Chapman. Eric Ward and Fernando Polanco were also victorious in doubles play, defeating Will Bullard and Jon Shaver 8-1.

Furman built upon its momentum from earlier matches to overcome the Presbyterian Blue Hose 7-0. Cameron, Chesworth, Fillnow, Patrick Gaughan, Henderson, and Ward were all straight-set victors in the final singles action of the day. Furman completed its sweep by taking every doubles match against Presbyterian.

In other action, Emory won five of six singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory over Presbyterian.

Furman will next face the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N.C. on February 13. The Paladins will not host another home match until March 14, when they face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
