GREENVILLE, S.C.- The No. 61 Furman Paladin men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to the Brown University Bears this afternoon at Mickel Tennis Center. The loss drops the Paladins to 12-8 on the season, while Brown improves to 7-5.

The Paladins began the day by winning two of three doubles matches, thus earning Furman the doubles point. Andrew Rogers and Patrick Fillnow handily defeated Brown's Chris Wolfe and Chris Drake, 8-2, while Charlie Lloyd and Chris Henderson beat Bears Ben Brier and Jonathon Argo, 8-6. Furman's lone doubles setback came at No. 1, where Brown's Nick Malone and Kris Goddard overcame a late charge by James Cameron and John Chesworth to emerge victorious, 9-7.

After winning the doubles point, the Paladins earned the first singles victory of the day with Chesworth's convincing 6-0, 6-0 win over Brown's Alex Walden. The Bears rebounded immediately, as Brown's Wolfe defeated Lee Nickell at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Malone then defeated Furman's Cameron at No. 2, 6-3, 6-2.

Brown's Drake, in one of the more dramatic matches of the day, needed two tiebreaks to defeat Henderson at No. 4 singles, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (8). Furman's Patrick Gaughan knotted the match at 3-3 with his 6-3, 6-2 victory against Goddard at No. 6 singles.

With the outcome depending upon the result of the No. 5 singles match, Brown's Ben Brier delivered by defeating Fillnow, 6-3, 6-3.

Furman will not play until Sunday, when the Paladins will travel to VMI and Virginia. The matches are slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
