FURMAN SHUTS OUT THE CITADEL IN QUARTERFINALS OF SOCON MEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.-- Furman shut out The Citadel 5-0 Friday in a quarterfinal match at the Southern Conference Tennis Championships.

The Paladins (21-12) swept the doubles competition and four of the six singles matches to advance to a Saturday semifinal match against sixth-seeded Davidson. The Wildcats got past No. 3 UNC Greensboro 4-2 Friday.

Furman won all three doubles matches to earn the first point and a 1-0 lead. The Paladins also recorded singles victories at No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 positions. Drew Parker defeated the Bulldogs' Elisban Rodriguez 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and John Chesworth beat Illie Splica 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. Patrick Gaughan posted a win at No. 5 defeating John Dougherty 6-2, 6-2 and James Moeckel defeated David Scates 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6. The Citadel, the seventh seed, finishes the season at 12-12.
