Charlotte Sweeps Furman Softball 2-1, 10-6

Greenville, S.C. -- The Charlotte 49ers scored ten runs on only eight hits, including a two-run homer by Jessica Moore, to down Furman 10-6 and sweep a non-conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Pepsi Stadium. The 49ers took game one 2-1.

Charlotte jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second. The 49ers used four walks and a crucial Lady Paladin error to plate five runs despite registering just one base hit.

Furman answered in the bottom half of the second inning scoring five times on six singles to knot the game at 5-5.

The 49ers regained the advantage in the third with two unearned runs. Becky Holt scored on a passed ball and J.J. McVay advanced home on an attempt to throw out a base runner at second to make the score 7-5.

After Furman added an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning, Charlotte tacked on three more for the final 10-6 margin.

Christy Murray pitched five innings to pick up the win for the 49ers. Murray 5-4 on the season, gave up ten hits and five earned runs in the victory. Kristen Bowen tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the save.

Sam Moore and Karianne Huffstetler both picked up two hits for Charlotte.

Erica Nesselroad, 0-9, pitched 1.2 innings of relief allowing three runs to take her second loss of the day for the Lady Paladins.

JoDee Eichelberger went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Jessica Matthews went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to pace the Furman offense.

In game one, Bowen allowed just one Furman run over seven innings to improve to 7-4 as Charlotte downed the Lady Paladins 2-1.

Holt scored on a two-out throwing error by Furman to break open a 1-1 tie and give Charlotte all the offense it would need.

Nesselroad surrendered one unearned run in 0.1 innings to take the loss. Eichelberger went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Furman.

Furman, 5-26 on the season, returns to action Tuesday when it visits Coast Carolina for a doubleheader before opening conference play on Saturday at UNC Greensboro.
