Furman, Georgia Southern Split Softball Doubleheader

Greenville, S.C. -- Kristin White laced an RBI triple to left in the bottom of the tenth inning plating Valerie Cross and lifting Furman to a 2-1 victory over Georgia Southern in game one of a softball doubleheader Saturday at Pepsi Stadium. Georgia Southern took game two 10-3.

Furman's Rachel Henley and Georgia Southern's Cary Moone staged a pitcher's duel in game one. With the game scoreless after nine innings, the Eagles scored Shanita Black from second on a Furman error for a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, Karen Myers scored on a fielder's choice to tie the game 1-1. White followed with a triple over the left fielder's head to win the game 2-1.

White went 2-for-4 with a triple while JoDee Eichelberger went 2-for-4 to lead the Lady Paladins. Henley picked up the win for Furman to move to 6-13 on the season. The junior pitched ten innings allowing no earned runs while striking out five.

Moone took the loss allowing one earned run on five hits in 9.1 innings of work.

In game two, the Eagles used a four run second inning and two Maria Laurato homers to down Furman 10-3.

Laurato went 2-for-3 with two homers and three RBI to lead the Eagle attack. Katie Smith and Kim Griffin each added a home run in the Georgia Southern victory.

Tiffany Urena picked up the victory for Georgia Southern. Urena surrendered just one earned run on six hits while tossing a complete game.

Erica Nesselroad suffered the loss for the Lady Paladins giving up four runs on four hits in only one inning of work. Kristy Goodrich was touched up for four home runs in relief of Nesselroad.

LaKerah Barr paced the Lady Paladin attack going 3-for-4 with and RBI and a stolen base. Barr's stolen base, number 21 on the season, moved her past Tonya Olson into first on Furman's single season stolen base ledger.

The Lady Paladins (8-30, 3-2 SoCon) and Eagles (18-17, 2-3) conclude their three game series with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday.
