FURMAN SOFTBALL FALLS TO DETROIT, BETHUNE-COOKMAN AT REBEL SPRING GAMES

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Bethune-Cookman erased a 1-0 Furman lead with two runs in the top of the third and two in the fifth to defeat the Lady Paladins 4-1 in softball action Tuesday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. Detroit Mercy downed the Lady Paladins 10-3 in the first game of the day.

Furman opened the scoring in the first against Bethune-Cookman. After reaching on an error, Joni Lockridge stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs Karen Myers beat out a bunt down the third base line allowing Lockridge to score.

The Wildcats led off the top of the third with back-to-back singles. Chloe Thomas and Rhoenita Yancey each moved up a base on a passed ball. Thomas tied the game at 1-1 when JoDee Eichleberger misplayed a ground ball off of the bat of Melanie Johnson. Two batters later, Tiffany Browser grounded out to second base allowing Yancey to score the go ahead run.

Bethune-Cookman added to its lead in the fifth. Yancey reached base on bunt single and Johnson walked to give the Wildcats runners at first and second. Andrea Thomas followed with a two-run double to left for the final 4-1 margin.

Lauren McCoy took the win for the Wildcats allowing no earned runs on just two hits while tossing a complete game. McCoy struck out six and walked one.

Yancey led Bethune-Cookman at the plate goig 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Rachel Henley, 0-5 on the season, suffered the loss for Furman. The junior allowed four runs, only two earned, on seven hits.

Catcher Karen Myers went 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead Furman offensively.

In game one, Detroit scored six runs in the first inning on its way to a 10-3 win.

Katrina Klemp and Kristin Hartin both went 2-for-4 to pace the Titans (3-3), while Anna Ollgaard threw a complete-game to earn the win.

Centerfielder LaKerah Barr was 2-for-3 with a run scored for Furman, while senior Kristy Goodrich (1-5) suffered the loss. Goodrich surrendered nine earned runs on 11 hits in six innings.

Furman, 1-13 on the season, returns to action Wednesday in a 12:30 p.m. contest against Loyola-Chicago.
