Furman Softball Drops Pair at Gardner-Webb 4-1, 4-0

Boiling Springs, N.C. -- Rachael Riopel went 3-for-3 with two runs and Jenny Wallace went 2-for-2 with two runs batted in to lead Gardner-Webb to a 4-0 victory over Furman and sweep of a softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon in Boiling Springs, N.C. The Bulldogs downed Furman 4-1 in game one.

Gardner-Webb broke open a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the fourth with two runs. After loading the bases with three straigh singles, Wallace singled through the left side to score Riopel. Jordyn Hill followed with a squeeze bunt to score Lani Shaffer.

The Bulldogs capped the scoring with two more runs in the fifth. Gardner-Webb opened the inning with three straight singles, including an RBI base hit by Christie Barlow. Two batters later, Wallace singled through the left side once again to score Shaffer for the final 4-0 margin.

Stephanie Taylor picked up the victory for Gardner-Webb limiting Furman to only three hits through five innings of work.

Rachel Henley (4-11) suffered the loss in the six inning, rain shortened game. Henley surrendered nine hits and four earned runs while striking out two batters.

Jessica Matthews singled and drew two walk in three trips to the plate to lead Furman offensively.

In game two, Shaffer laced a two-out double to leftfield allowing Allison Murphy to scoreto break a 1-1 tie. Shelley Lavender added to the lead with a two-out, two-run double down the left field line in the sixth to increase the lead to 4-1.

Stacie Reichert tossed a complete game while allowing just four hits and one run to earn the win.

Henley gave up three earned runs over six innings to take the loss. JoDee Eichelberger went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run to lead the Lady Paladins at the plate.

Furman, 5-24 on the season, returns home for a doubleheader against Charlotte this Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
