Elon Sweeps Furman Softball 4-2, 4-3

Elon, N.C. -- Elon scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning of game two and held on for a 4-3 victory over Furman to sweep Saturday's softball doubleheader at East Field. The Phoenix rallied for a 4-2 win in game one.

After scoring its first run of the game on a throwing error by the Lady Paladins, Elon's Meredith Miley delivered a two run single to center field to give the Phoenix a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Pitcher Kristy Goodrich helped her own cause with a two-out single to center in the top of the fourth scoring Jessica Matthews to trim the led to two runs.

Elon stretched its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Natalie Layden followed Megan Borgaard's double with an RBI single to up the lead to three.

The Lady Paladins mounted a rally in the seventh inning. Goodrich led off the the inning with a single and Kristin White laced a one-out single to give Furman runners at first and second. After LaKerah Barr struck out JoDee Eichelberger singled to center allowing Goodrich to score. Jessica Swearengin's throw from center was wild allowing White to score and Eichelberger to advance to second base. Pitcher Whitney Meeks got Megan Jaudon to ground back to the mound to end the rally and the ball game.

Meeks surrendered just two earned runs on eight hits to improve to 11-6 on the season, while Goodrich dropped to 3-10 after giving up only one earned run on five safeties. Goddrich went 2-for-2 with and RBI and run scored for Furman, while White went 3-for-3 with a run.

In game one, Elon's Dani Concepcion broke open a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out, two-run double to right center to lift the Phoenix to a 4-2 victory.

Jaudon contributed RBI singles in the first and third innings to give Furman a 2-1 advantage through four and a half innings. Elon evened the game in the fifth on Jamie DuPont's RBI double.

Tied 2-2 in the sixth, Christina Melton reached on a two-out walk and Paige Goss singled to set up Concepcion's game-winning double.

Borgaard limited Furman to two runs on five hits to improve to 6-2 for the Phoenix. Rachel Henley, 8-17, suffered the loss for the Lady Paladins giving up four runs on nine hits.

Concepcion went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI to pace the Phonix attack. Jaudon led Furman going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Furman and Elon wrap up their three-game weekend series with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday at East Field.
