FURMAN SOFTBALL DROPS THREE AT CHARLESTON SOUTHERN INVITATIONAL

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Furman Lady Paladin softball team dropped all three games on the opening day of the 2004 Charleston Southern Invitational in Summerville, S.C., Saturday. Furman fell 3-0 versus UCF, 4-1 to Canisius and 3-2 in the nightcap against North Carolina A&T.

In gameone, UCF broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the sixth with a Crystle Krafft RBI double to center to take a 1-0 lead. The Golden Knights added a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 and stretched the lead to three when Jania Shinhoster scored on a passed ball.

Dana Gilmore pitched a complete game to pick up the win for the Golden Knights while Rachel Henley suffered the loss for Furman. Henley allowed eight hits and three runs over six innings of work.

In game two, Canisius jumped out to a 2-0 first inning advantage and held on for a 4-1 win over the Lady Paladins.

Leadoff hitter Jamie Gorcsynski went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Tempie Coelho-Freeman went 2-for-4 with two RBI to pace Canisius.

Andrea Bunten worked six innings allowing only one run to earn the victory while Courtney Piar worked one inning in relief to pick up the save.

Kristy Goodrich (1-3) took the loss for the Lady Paladins allowing two earned runs on seven hits over four innings.

In the final game of the day, Furman jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Megan Jaudon laced a one-out triple down the rightfield line scoring JoDee Eichelberger from first.

North Carolina A&T claimed the lead in the bottom of the third with three runs. Two Furman errors and a Renecia Lovelace two-run double gave the Aggies a 3-1 lead they would not surrender.

Rachel Henley (0-4) suffered the loss for Furman despite allowing no earned runs in six innings of work.

Leftfielder Joni Lockridge led Furman at the plate going 2-for-2 with a run scored.

Latronda Anderson earned the win for North Carolina A&T. Anderson held Furman to two runs on seven hits while tossing a complete game.

Furman, 1-9 on the season, returns to action Sunday when it battles Akron at 11:00 a.m. and the College of Charleston at 1:00 p.m.
