FURMAN DOWNS AUSTIN PEAY 5-0, JENKINS SCORES FIRST WIN AS LADY PALADIN HEAD COACH

AUBURN, Alabama -- Senior Kristy Goodrich pitched a complete game shutout to lead Furman to a 5-0 win over Austin Peay Sunday morning at the Tiger Invitational in Auburn, Ala. The win was the first for Dana Jenkins as head coach of the Lady Paladins.

Furman got on the board in the first inning. LaKerah Barr led off the inning with a double off of the third baseman's glove. After stealing third, Barr scored on JoDee Eichelberger's RBI ground out to second.

Austin Peay (1-4) threatened to wrestle away the lead in the bottom of the second with three consecutive walks to start the inning. Furman starter Kristy Goodrich settled down and got a strikeout, ground ball to short for a force out at home and a pop up to short to end the inning.

Furman (1-4) extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth on a Jessica Matthews RBI double off of the wall in left-centerfield. The Lady Paladins increased their advantage to 3-0 in the sixth. After reaching base on a two-out walk, Kristen White stole second and scored on a Barr single to left field.

The Lady Paladins tacked on two more insurance runs in the seventh inning. With two outs and two runners on, Karen Myers laced a 2-2 pitch over the centerfielder's head for a triple driving home Matthews and Valerie Cross.

Goodrich improved her record to 1-1 on the season. The Lordstown, Ohio, native struck out seven Lady Govs while allowing just three hits.

Matthews led Furman at the plate going 3-for-3 with a double and a base on balls, while Barr went 2-for-3 with a double.

Lindsey Porter suffered the loss for Austin Peay, her first decision of the season.

Furman returns to action Tuesday when it visits Georgia Tech for a 2p.m. doubleheader.
