LADY PALADIN SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON WITH SWEEP OF GARDNER-WEBB

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Kate Morrison and Karen Myers each pounded out four hits and Furman pitchers allowed no runs and only four hits over 13 innings as the Lady Paladins swept Gardner-Webb 7-0, 8-0 in softball action Saturday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.

Carolina Evans delivered Furman's first run of the season scoring Meagen Johnson on a bases loaded single with one out in the bottom of the second. Joni Lockridge and Jessica Matthews scored on an error by Gardner-Webb second baseman Lani Shaffer, and Myers singled to drive home Evans to give Furman a 4-0 lead.

Evans went 3-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored, while Myers was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Johnson joined Morrison with two hits for the Lady Paladins. Sophomore Rachel Henley (1-0) earned the win in game one. The righthander pitched 5.0 innings allowed, no runs and struck out three.

Stacie Reichert (0-3) took the loss for Gardner-Webb allowing six runs, two earned, over 3.1 innings.

In game two, Furman broke open a 1-0 game with six runs in the bottom of the third and cruised to the 8-0 win in six innnings.

Matthews and Morrison each collected RBI doubles in the third, while Karen Myers added a sixth inning triple scoring LaKerah Barr to end the game.

Johnson (1-0) picked up her first win ofr the year allowing no runs on only two hits over four innings of work.

Gardner-Webb's Stephanie Taylor (2-1) took the loss, her first of the year.

Furman (2-0) returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Georgia Tech in a double header beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Pepsi Stadium
