CHATTANOOGA TOPS LADY PALADINS 6-2, SWEEPS SOCON SERIES

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Chattanooga's Jada Pescatore drove in five runs, including a three-run double in the first inning, to lead the Lady Mocs to a 6-2 win and series sweep of Furman Saturday afternoon at Frost Stadium in Chattanooga.

After Teri Herbert reached base on a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt in the first inning, Melissa Ramirez gave the Lady Mocs runners at second and third by singling and advancing to second on the Lady Paladins' throw to third. Following a groundout and a Jennifer Reed walk, Pescatore delivered all the runs Chattanooga would need with a bases clearing double to left-center field off Furman starter Kristy Goodrich.

Chattanooga added to its lead in the bottom of the third. With one out and runners at second and third, Pescatore laced a single up the middle to score Lindsey Brown and give UTC a 4-0 lead.

Trailing 5-0 in the top of the sixth, Furman got on the board for the first time. Kelli Leachman hammered a two-out double to center and Joni Lockridge singled to center to give the Lady Paladins runners at first and third. Catcher Karen Myers drove home Leachman with and infield single to trim the margin to 5-1.

Pescatore put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the sixth by following a Reed double with an RBI single to left.

Awbrey Winckler (16-12) picked up the win for Chattanooga, her second of the series, after allowing only one earned run on 12 hits over seven innings.

Goodrich (0-1), making her first start of the year, suffered the loss after surrendering three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings of work.

Pescatore led the Lady Mocs with three hits, while Herbert, Ramirez and Reed contributed two each for Chattanooga.

LaKerah Barr, 7-for-11 in the series, tallied three hits and four at bats to pace Furman. Leachman, Lockridge and Kristen White each recorded two hits for the Lady Paladins.

The win improves Chattanooga to 30-24 overall and 8-6 in the league, while Furman falls to 18-22 overall and 7-8 in the Southern Conference.

The Lady Paladins return to action Wednesday when they visit nationally-ranked South Carolina for a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
