LADY PALADINS SWEEP DOUBLE HEADER AGAINST WINTHROP

ROCK HILL, SC- The Furman softball team defeated the Winthrop Eagles 5-0 and 14-2 in a non-conference double-header at Terry Field.

Furman broke open the first game in the fifth when Kelli Leachman slammed a double off the left center fence to start the inning. Leachman would come around and score one out later on Karen Myers' RBI single to take the 1-0 lead. The Paladins would add four more in the seventh on two hits and two Winthrop errors.

Paladin pitcher Rachel Henley improved to 8-3 on the season as she shut down the Winthrop offense holding the Lady Eagles to only three hits. The Lady Eagles would strand five runners.

Jessica Griffin went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Furman.

Kelli Johnson (12-7) was the losing pitcher giving up five runs (1 earned) on seven hits, while striking out seven.

In the nightcap the Paladins' bats broke out for 14 runs on 12 hits and two Lady Eagle errors. Furman would score seven runs in the second and never look back as they added four in the third, two in the fourth, and one more in the fifth.

The Lady Eagles would come back with two in the fourth, but that was all Winthrop could manage on four hits.

LaKerah Barr and Kate Morrison both went 2-for-4 for Furman. Meagen Johnson picked up the win for the Paladins and improves to 4-4 on the season. Katie Kipisz, Kim Cox, Megan Young, and Carol Douglas combined for the four Winthrop hits, each collecting one apiece.

The Lady Paladins are back in action on Saturday and Sunday, April 6th and 7th, as Furman hosts Chatanooga in a rematch of last season's Southern Conference tournament final.
