FURMAN SOFTBALL SWEEPS CHARLESTON SOUTHERN

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman Softball, led by freshman Jessica Matthews, improved to 3-1 on the season with a two-game sweep of Charleston Southern Thursday at Pepsi Stadium.

Matthews, a product of Princeton Christian Academy in Homestead, Fla., went five-for-six at the plate and drove in three runs to key the Furman offense. In addition to Matthew¹s contribution, La Kerah Barr went three-for-five with a stolen base and Alison McNulty was three-for-seven as the Furman offense came alive.

In game one, freshman Rachel Henley pitched a shutout for the second consecutive day, giving up three hits in seven innings work. Henley earned the win and improved to 2-0 on the year, while CSU¹s Dana Jacobs took the loss after giving up one earned run off four hits in six inning on the mound.

Furman fell behind 2-0 in the second inning of game two, but the Lady Paladins answered with five runs in the third inning. Furman added five more scores in the bottom of the fifth to win 10-2 on the eight run rule.

Kristy Goodrich got the win (1-0), while the Bucs¹ Melissa Arteaga took the loss after giving up eight runs off 10 hits in 3.1 innings.

Furman will be in action again on Thursday, Feb. 26, when they face the Phoenix of Elon on the road.
