Coastal & Furman Split Doubleheader

CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina scored a come-from-behind 5-4 victory in the opener, but Furman posted an 8-3 win in game two for a split of the softball doubleheader played Saturday at Lady Chants Field. The two squads will square off again on Sunday at Coastal Carolina at 1:00 p.m. Furman took a 4-2 lead in the opener with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh but did not record an out in the bottom of the inning as Coastal tallied three runs for the victory. Pitcher Danielle Jenkins (2-0) helped herself with a single to right field that scored Kelli Julg for the game winner. Jenkins scattered 14 hits, while striking out four and walking none in the victory. Kristy Goodrich (1-1) took the loss for Furman. She allowed four runs, with just two being earned, walked one, and struck out four. The second game was close for two innings before Furman tallied five runs in the third. With the game tied 1-1, Jessica Matthews connected on a one-out, three-run homerun to give the Paladins the lead. Karen Myers hit a two-run double later in the same inning to stretch the lead to 6-1. Freshman Rachel Henley (3-1) earned the complete game victory by allowing no earned runs and just two walks while striking out eight Lady Chanticleers. Coastal starter Stephanie Belden (0-2) allowed seven hits and six runs in three innings for the loss.
