CAMPBELL TAKE TWO FROM PALADINS 6-3, 10-0

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Campbell University softball team (8-6-0) took two games from the Furman Paladins (4-4-0), 6-3 and 10-0 at Eakes Athletic Complex, Thursday.

In game one, Furman began the scoring when JoDee Eichelberger reached base off a Brooke Bennett error. Eichelberger advanced to second on a Carolyn Fortney throwing error and scored when Sarah Scott hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0, Furman.

But the Camels answered back with a five-run inning in the second. Senior designated player Leslie Standiford opened the inning with a single and advanced to second as Furman left fielder Scott misplayed the ball. Freshman Joy-Lee Richardson followed with an RBI double to center, plating Standiford. Fortney put another base runner on the pads when she was hit by a pitch. Shannon O'Bryan was walked to load the bases before shortstop Lisa Evans hit a bases-clearing triple. Evans would score the Camels' fifth running of the inning off a sacrifice fly from Bennett.

Furman cut the lead to two in the top of the fourth, as Jessica Matthews singled. Eichelberger took a walk to put two Paladins on base for Scott, who singled to load the bases. Another Paladin single, this one from Karen Myers (Durham, N.C./Charles E. Jordan), scored two Paladin runs to make the score, 5-3.

But the Camels added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as O'Bryan doubled and would later score when Evans added her fourth RBI of the game with a single.

Freshman hurler Holly Harris (3-1) picked up her third win of the season, scattering six hits and posting three runs, two earned. She struck out two and walked one in 5.1 innings of work. Junior Michelle Carey pitched 1.2 innings of relief work, fanning three of the six batters she faced, allowing just one hit. Rachel Henley (2-1) took the loss for Furman, pitching six innings and fanning three batters while walking two. She allowed six runs, all earned, while facing 28 batters.

Game two featured an impressive Camel hitting performance combined with a dominant pitching performance from senior hurler Kathy Freaney (2-3). Freaney fanned nine in five innings, allowing just one hit in picking up her second win of the season.

Offensively, the Camels were led by Standiford, who went 2-for-2 with a double, Harris, who was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Tiffany Moyer. Moyer was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI.

Meagen Johnson (1-3) took the loss for Furman, getting rocked for nine hits over 3.1 innings and allowing 10 runs, all earned while striking out two.
