FURMAN FALLS 4-1 TO UTC IN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

BRITTAIN, JACK NAMED TO ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee -- Furman's Lady Paladin softball team fell 4-1 to Chattanooga Sunday in the championship game of the Southern Conference Tournament.

UTC struck first in Sunday's nightcap when Teri Herbert doubled down the left field line, then scored on a Talya Trudell single to center field. An inning later, the Mocs scored again when Leah Tucker singled to left field, advanced to second on an Dana Reed sacrifice, and scored on an Angela Brewer single.

Furman answered in the bottom of the fourth, when center fielder Kay Brittain scored the lone Lady Paladin run. Brittain led off with a single to right center, advanced on a Kelli Leachman walk, took third on an Alison McNulty groundout, and scored on a single by Chrissy Hacker.

Though two runs would have been enough for the win, the Mocs scored two more in the sixth thanks to two hits, a sac bunt, and a sac fly.

With the win, UTC improved to 48-16 on the year, while Furman fell to 28-29. Chattanooga pitcher Talya Trudell improved to 19-7 on the year, while Furman's Kelly Jack fell to 10-9. Furman's Brittain and Jack were named to the Southern Conference All-Tournament Team.
